Biodiversity Week: Protecting nature across Energia Group

As Biodiversity Week shines a spotlight on the importance of protecting and restoring nature, Energia Group is reflecting on the meaningful steps being taken across our business to support biodiversity, preserve habitats and help pollinators thrive.

18th May, 2026

Protecting and enhancing biodiversity is a core priority for Energia Group. Across our onshore renewable energy facilities, including 18 onshore wind farms, our Huntstown campus, and our offices across the island of Ireland, we are taking practical action to restore habitats, protect species and support nature’s long-term resilience.

Energia Group is a proud Business Supporter of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan and an active member of the Business for Biodiversity Ireland Platform, reinforcing our commitment to supporting biodiversity across all areas of our operations.

Our biodiversity activities across our operations are guided by habitat management and enhancement plans, helping to protect and enhance existing habitats for wildlife. Some of these actions include:

  • Rewetting peatland to restore nature ecosystems and support peat-forming vegetation
  • Planting native hedgerows and trees
  • Installing bird and bat nesting boxes
  • Restoring ponds and improving meadow habitats through reduced mowing
  • Managing invasive species to improve peatland quality and biodiversity
  • Carrying out regular ecological surveys to monitor bird, insects and habitats

These measures not only support nature’s recovery while ensuring our built infrastructure works in harmony with the environment, but they also align with our commitments under the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13 Climate Action.

Biodiversity success in Action

At our Teiges Mountain Wind Farm in Co. Fermanagh, conservation measures have contributed to a significant increase in the endangered native Marsh Fritillary Butterfly, one of Ireland’s only legally protected insect.

At our Huntstown campus, we have created a heritage fruit orchard comprising eight native apple trees. Pollinator-friendly bulbs have been planted near the staff care park, with additional native wildflowers being prepared. Several House Martin nesting boxes have also been installed across our operations, creating more opportunities for native species to thrive.

Supporting Communities & Employee Action

Through our Greener Possibilities Fund, we support local charities in their own biodiversity efforts through Global Action Plan and Grow NI’s community gardens and helping Keep NI Beautiful’s Green Flag Programme.

Our people also play an important role when it comes to biodiversity. Employees regularly volunteer on biodiversity and species conservation projects across the island of Ireland, while our staff-led Green Team promotes biodiversity awareness through educational green talks and practical initiatives such as native planting and pollinator-friendly landscaping around out offices.

Looking Ahead

As we mark Biodiversity Week, we are reminded that protecting biodiversity is not a single initiative, it’s an ongoing responsibility.

From wind farms to power stations, from community partnerships to employee action, Energia Group is continuously expanding its biodiversity efforts and exploring new ways to protect our environment and wildlife.

Because creating a more sustainable energy future also means protecting the natural world that powers it!
