Pupils from 5th and 6th Class at Coolard National School recently became the first school group to visit Ballylongford Wind Farm since the Co. Kerry site entered commercial operation earlier this year.

The visit gave students the opportunity to experience a working wind farm first-hand and learn how wind energy is helping to power Ireland's transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future. During the tour, pupils discovered how wind turbines generate electricity, learned about the role renewable energy plays in reducing carbon emissions, and explored the technology behind modern wind farms.

The pupils were welcomed by members of the Energia Renewables Ballylongford  team, who shared insights into the development and operation of the project and answered questions about renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and careers in the sector.

Energia Renewables Community Liaison Officer, Tara Carroll, said:

"We were delighted to welcome the pupils and staff of Coolard National School to Ballylongford Wind Farm. As the first school group to visit the site since commercial operations began, they were able to see first-hand how renewable energy is generated and the positive role it can play in building a more sustainable future. The pupils asked excellent questions and showed great enthusiasm for learning about renewable energy."

The visit left a lasting impression on the students, with 6th class pupil, Mikey, commenting:

"I really loved visiting the wind farm and seeing the turbines up close. It was exciting to learn how they generate electricity and it made me want to find out even more about renewable energy and how we can help the environment."

The Energia Renewables team are committed to community engagement through school wind farm visits and their programme of educational outreach, inspiring the next generation to learn more about science, sustainability, and the environment.

As Ireland continues its journey towards a low-carbon future, initiatives such as these help young people better understand the importance of renewable energy and the role they can play in creating a cleaner, greener world.
