Coolmeen NS celebrates Global Wind Day

Coolmeen National School marked Global Wind Day with a memorable celebration, visiting Energia Group’s Crossmore Wind Farm, near Lissycasey in County Clare, as part of a poetry competition centred on the theme of wind and renewable energy.

Pupils embraced the challenge which was set by Energia Group, to showcase its 7-turbine Crossmore Wind Farm, which started commercial operation in December.

The Energia judges were impressed with the school children’s enthusiasm and imaginative poems, which they said reflected both creativity and an awareness of the importance of renewable energy.

After careful consideration, the winners of the competition were announced at a special school visit to Crossmore Wind Farm. Hearing that her entry had been singled out for its originality, imagination and expression, 5th Class pupil Fiadh, said, “Winning the poetry competition is amazing, but seeing the huge turbines is even cooler. I never imagined we’d get the chance to look inside one of these turbines”.

As part of the prize, Coolmeen National School became the first school to visit Energia’s newest wind farm, giving students a valuable opportunity to see renewable energy in action and deepen their understanding of how wind power contributes to a more sustainable future.

School teacher Rebecca Cleary commented, “We are incredibly proud of all the students who took part. Their creativity and engagement with such an important topic has been inspiring and visiting Crossmore Wind Farm made the experience even more meaningful and memorable.”

Energia Renewables Community Liaison Officer, Tara Carroll, said,“We were delighted with the uptake on the competition which made the judging process particularly challenging. The Energia Renewables team try and do something special for Global Wind Day every year in June and this year it was the turn of Crossmore Wind Farm to host the celebrations. However, we offer wind farm tours for local schools during school term – weather permitting”.
