Operating for over 20 years, Huntstown 1 has been a critical source of security of supply to the Irish electricity grid, specifically for the greater Dublin area.

Once the refurbishment is completed, Huntstown 1 will operate more efficiently, with lower emissions and greater flexibility providing secure, dependable and efficient power generation into the future. This project will be key to supporting Ireland’s security of supply as demand continues to grow and will facilitate the increasing amount of renewable energy sources onto the energy system.

Work is already underway in factories where equipment is being manufactured, and a team will be on site over the summer to do further preparation work. The upgrade work on site will commence in 2028 and will involve a couple of hundred people.

Speaking on the partnership, John Newman, Managing Director of FlexGen says “Energia and Siemens Energy have a partnership spanning over a quarter of a century, built on mutual trust and respect for the expertise from both companies. This long-standing partnership enables Energia Group to operate Huntstown as a dependable, flexible, and efficient power source to help Ireland transition to a greener energy future”.

Dan Taylor, VP Gas Services UK & IE for Siemens Energy, says “The refurbishment we’ll carry out at Huntstown will provide more efficiency and more flexibility on the grid system and enable the security of supply for Ireland. Our working relationship is not a simple transaction, it’s a partnership. We’ve reached a point where together, as partners, we are able to ensure the station will continue to provide power for decades to come”.
