Energia Group’s Asset Management Director and proud Cork man Conor Keane promotes engineering as a career choice for young people as part of STEPs Engineers Week
Energia Group is delighted to take part in STEPs Engineers Week, a celebration of the world of engineering in Ireland which runs from 5-11 March.
As a leading developer and operator of renewable energy across the island of Ireland we are proud to be profiling some of our team working on projects critical to Ireland achieving its climate action targets.
Conor Keane is Energia Group’s Asset Management Director. Speaking about his role he said, “In my role I oversee the operations of an extensive portfolio of wind farms and two power stations in Hunstown. I work with a dedicated team of energy engineering experts who manage the generation energy supplied to homes and businesses across the country.”
Following his graduation from the University of Limerick Conor studied Engineering Management in Brunel University in London. Conor worked in the pharma industry before joining Energia Group in 2005. Speaking about his career to date Conor said, “I have worked in a number of different jobs in Energia Group, starting out I was the Maintenance Manager for Huntstown power station, in 2012 I became the Plant Manager and in 2016 I took up my current role. I am incredibly fortunate to work with a dedicated team of technical and energy experts and together we ensure the efficient operation of our energy generation assets so that the energy we produce can power homes, businesses, schools and hospitals across the country.”
He added, “I also have a health and safety leadership role in the Group, a responsibility that is close to my heart. Safety first is at the core of everything we do in Energia Group at our construction sites, at our operating wind farms and at our power stations. Over the past 2 years, like many businesses the safety and well-being of our people was of paramount importance as we navigated our way through the global pandemic together.”
Sharing his advice to young people considering a career in engineering, Conor, said, “If like me, you love to solve problems, curious about how things work and are a creative thinker then engineering is a certainly a career worth considering. There are lots of different types of engineering from which there are a variety of career pathways. I chose mechanical engineering because I always wanted to know how things worked and how I could make something work in a better way! As an engineer you have the opportunity to make the world a better place through innovation and problem solving.”
