As one of Ireland’s leading renewable energy developers and suppliers of green electricity, Energia Group proudly employs scientists in various fields, from marine biology to data science. This Science Week, which runs from the 13th to the 20th of November, Energia Group is celebrating the infinite possibilities and the role of science in the energy sector and how that contributes to Ireland's climate goals.

Ruairi O’Dea holds a degree in Science and a Master's in Biotech and Business from University College Dublin. He recently joined the company as a Graduate, in the Group’s Graduate Development Programme, and now works as a marketing assistant on the brand team. Ruairi’s role is varied, and, speaking about it, he said: “One of the things I like the most about my job is that I get to collaborate with different departments across Energia Group. My science background applies to the work I am doing in Energia Group, particularly the work I do on communications materials for some of our renewable projects. Having the ability to understand complex scientific information and being able to communicate that in a way that is accessible to all stakeholders is a critical skill.

As part of his undergraduate thesis, Ruairi was involved in a research project that investigated the presence of a particular protein in deer. Speaking about his research, he said, “I was proud to contribute towards an area that can play a role in helping biodiversity and that this work was published in a peer reviewed scientific journal.”

Encouraging more young people to get involved in science, Ruairi said: “If you find an area of interest that drives you, don’t be afraid to push on and study it further. I have always loved science and in particular the natural world. I have always studied what I found interesting, and it has led me to my current role where I am part of a team contributing to Ireland’s climate action goals. I am looking forward to what’s to come as my career continues to evolve.”
