Energia is proud to support the IRFU’s Audio Description, ensuring that visually impaired supporters can enjoy live rugby in every province of Ireland.

This initiative reflects our shared commitment to making the sport more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all fans. It also contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 - which we are aligned - focusing on the creation of more inclusive and resilient communities.

The Audio Description service provides live, in‑stadium commentary designed specifically for supporters who rely on detailed verbal descriptions to follow the action. Rather than a standard broadcast feed, the service is tailored specifically for visually impaired fans- capturing movement, positioning, atmosphere, and the rhythm of the game. Volunteers are encouraged to “focus on describing what is seen, not just what is known, to include on-pitch and off-pitch elements to help bring live match experiences to people who might otherwise be excluded”.

It allows visually impaired fans to experience rugby with the same intensity and excitement as anyone else in the stadium.

'“Introducing audio description commentary is a powerful step forward for inclusivity in Irish sport, and Energia is proud to play a role in making that happen. As long‑standing supporters of rugby, from grassroots to the international stage, we want to ensure that every supporter, regardless of physical differences, can connect with the excitement, atmosphere and passion of matchday, both at the Aviva Stadium and in stadiums across all four provinces” said Energia Sponsorship & Events Manager, Lorna Danaher.

Energia’s support ensures that this service is now available across Leinster, Munster, Connacht, and Ulster, making accessibility a consistent feature of matchdays rather than a regional exception. Our sponsorship covers the training and development of volunteer commentators, delivered in partnership with Vision Sports Ireland, and supports the ongoing expansion of the programme as demand grows.
