Here comes the Sun

We are delighted to announce the start of an exciting new chapter for Energia Group with the commencement of works on our first utility-scale solar energy project.

April 21st, 2026

The first phase of works will focus on the Fieldstown 110 kV Substation, near Rolestown, Co. Dublin, which will facilitate the export of renewable energy from 3 consented solar farms in the Group’s solar development pipeline.  The projects in the nearby townlands of Fieldstown, Gerrardstown and Ballaghaweary will have a maximum export capacity of over 150 MW – generating enough renewable energy to meet the average annual electricity needs of around 40,000 Irish households.  Construction of these solar projects is expected to commence in the autumn.

Energia will be investing around €45 million in the new substation development, which will connect to the transmission network at Finglas via an underground cable. To mark the start of construction, the Energia Renewables construction team, together with the main electrical and civil contractors Suir Engineering, invited local households to a ‘Meet the Team’ event at the nearby Kettle’s Country House Hotel. Residents were able to view plans, ask questions and register for a construction text-messaging service.

Welcoming the start of works, Energia Renewables Construction Manager, Austin Rafferty, said, “This is a major milestone for Energia Group and I’m delighted to see the initial works begin on our first major solar energy project. Connecting more renewable electricity to the national grid is central to our strategy and is key to facilitating the achievement of Ireland’s Climate Action targets, as well as contributing to energy security.”

The Fieldstown, Gerrardstown and Ballaghaweary solar farms are scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2028.
