Ballylongford Wind Farm in North Kerry has been operational since April 2026. As part of this wind farm development, Energia constructed a 38 kV substation extension of the larger Drombeg 110 kV Substation which was developed by Tullamore Solar Farm Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidary of ESB.
The wind farm will have a 25-year operational life from the date of commissioning.

April 2026: Start of commercial operation

Drombeg 38 kV Substation

Energia Renewables have constructed a 38 kV substation in the townland of Tullamore, near Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.
This substation is an extension of the Drombeg 110 kV Substation, which was developed by Tullamore Solar Farm Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ESB.
Our substation extension is located within the confines of the already consented Drombeg solar farm and adjacent to the Drombeg 110 kV Substation.
This project will facilitate the export of renewable energy from Energia’s Ballylongford Wind Farm development onto the national grid.
Turbine deliveries
Turbine components were transported along the national and regional road network from Foynes Port. Components travelled along the N69 from Foynes to Tarbert, on the L1010 through Ballylongford village and onto the R552 to the site entrance. To accommodate abnormal loads, some permanent upgrade works were carried out along the route.
Community benefit fund
We want local people to see and feel the benefit of renewable energy through our wind farm benefit funds, which support community groups, voluntary organisations and environmental projects situated near our operational wind farm sites.
The Ballylongford community benefit fund will be designed to meet the needs of the local area and will be administered by an independent charitable foundation on behalf of Energia.
Project grants will be made available after one year of wind farm operation.
Working with schools
It’s breathtaking to see a wind turbine up close. The Energia Renewables Operations team are happy to facilitate school visits or classroom talks on wind energy:
- Discover…how wind turbines generate electricity
- Learn… about local Energia wind farms
- Explore... the need for climate action and energy transition
